I feel like I should explain my moral choices here.

Kinja'd!!!

Assholes who choose to drive in an autonomous car should always eat the divider.

Kinja'd!!!

Jogging is a terrible hobby and it depresses me. The fat people clearly enjoy their lives more and deserve to live

Kinja'd!!!

Normally, I’d value people over animals, but the animals are crossing with the light. Those are some pretty fucking smart animals. They deserve to live.

Kinja'd!!!

Those three people die no matter what, so I don’t see why I should kill the other two.

Kinja'd!!!

Like I said, asshole in the autonomous car always eats the wall. Should have bought a Vette, grandpa.

Kinja'd!!!

Little girl had the light. She’s smart like the animals.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve played enough video gamesto know that killing him is going to earn me bonus points

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Why are his sleeves so long? He has it coming.

Kinja'd!!!

Bank robber and a guy who is clearly his accomplice

Kinja'd!!!

It seemed sexist to choose the lane that only had women.

I laughed. This is a crap town though, so many Jay walkers, thieves, hyperinteligent animals and barriers seemingly placed on the road for no other reason but to kill people

I know, right? Why are there so many concrete barriers?

This is pretty much the trolley experiment, so there’s a reason why I think this is a load of horseshit. In the vanilla trolley experiment (without the dank memes), all people are equal: no gender, weight, age, whatever. It’s just human life. My problem with this is that it starts having people value some lives more than others in society, which is a huge issue that brings out the worst in people.

It certainly took me to some dark places. I never realized how willing I was to run over joggers until I was presented with the opportunity.

My issue with your thought process was that you stopped killing the driver of the autonomous car and started going after bank robbers.

That bothered me too. I’m pretty sure it’s the same thought process that resulted in ED-209

Why is “stop” never an option? Especially since he clearly has a red light in a few of these.

I played, and one of my biggest deviations from the norm (“others”) is protecting people who are crossing in compliance with the law, as opposed to flouting the law.

Another issue I have with that is that the car isn’t going to know the difference between a doctor and a criminal or an athlete and an overweight person, making any scenario where you’re supposed to judge between the two as pointless as it is in bad taste.

Same. In addition to the moral factor, from a legal standpoint I believe you’re less like to lose a suit to someone who was jay walking than to someone who followed traffic signals.

The description explains that in these scenarios, the brakes have failed and therefore stopping is not an options.

Well that’s one shitty car then for it to happen 13 times.

This stuff is so funny. Like it’s going to matter when self driving cars are clawing through the front window of my home.

I also like to point out that this is a super rare situation to end up in. The current breed of AVs have driven tens of thousands of miles (maybe more or maybe a bit less, I’m just guessing here) and none of them have had to make a “trolley experiment” choice.

And an everyday version of the trolley experiment exists in common life - do you hit the animal/kid in the road, or do you swerve, possibly crashing your car and injuring/killing yourself? Most people seem to choose swerve (unless they’re a dick that gets a hardon from killing squirrels), so I think we’re safe-ish.

I had to share this with the office as we just had a discussion on this Moral Machine thing. Thank you for the great laughs
